Auspicious Baby Chinese Name Singapore

"不怕生坏命,最怕改坏名" – This saying highlights how important it is to choose a good Chinese name. Everyone hopes to have a Chinese name 华文名 with profound meaning. A suitable and unique Chinese name for your baby means a good start to success and happiness.

The selection of a good name in Chinese culture is deeply rooted in the concept of Bazi (八字), or the Four Pillars of Destiny. Bazi refers to the eight characters derived from a person's birth date and time of birth, representing the year, month, day, and hour of their birth, each associated with one of the 5 elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water.  In Bazi's analysis, these elements interact in different ways, and the balance of these elements is essential for the person's overall well-being and fortune. If a baby’s Bazi chart reveals a deficiency or excess of certain elements, selecting a name that complements these elements can help support the child’s life path.

Importance of a Name - Chinese Metaphysics and More

The name of a person is significant. Suppose we were to summarise the importance of a name. In that case, it will boil down to identity, recognition, and facilitating communication and interaction.

A person's name is usually one of the first information you exchange when meeting a new person. People remember each other based on appearance and name. With a rise in the use of e-meeting and communication behind the screen, the significance of a name is even more critical.

Apart from what a name usually does, a Chinese name, in particular, has a more far-reaching effect than one would expect. 姓名学, also known as the study of names, is a specific area of Chinese Metaphysics dedicated to naming services. Many wonder why such colossal emphasis is given to a name; perhaps these are the few reasons that allow a name to strongly influence a person's luck - from the lens of Chinese Metaphysics.

1) A name is for life: A personal name is for life. Be it an English name (Western Name) or a Chinese name, it is a person's identity for life. People resonate you with the name you have

2) Complimenting what cannot be changed: In most of our articles, we emphasize that while Bazi cannot be amended, other things can help improve one’s life. This may be Feng Shui (The environment one's in), Auspicious Date selection (Beginning an essential event on a right note), or Auspicious name selection (起名); these are all possible ways we can "act" to improve on things that we could not amend. A name is a good opportunity (usually for the parents) to improve a child's birth details (Bazi).

3) Deeper connection and meaning: When our parents give us a personal name, it usually has a deeper connection. A child may represent a bundle of joy a couple had hoped for. Hence, when naming the child, the happiness of the parents is reflected as part of the child’s name (悦、乐、容). In other cases, parents may also hope their child upholds certain principles that they hold dear; it could be anything ranging from integrity, love, peace, or other noble traits (德、义、贤). Hence, a personal name usually embodies much deeper meanings and may contain positive attributes.

4) Energy: You are being recognised by your name. People reach out to you by calling, writing, or typing your name. All these generate an energy field (磁场). Having a positive and auspicious association will raise the level of positive energies. Having doubts? This is closely tied to psychology; if you wake up positive and say, "Today is a good day, and I can do it!" thrice, you are more likely to succeed. This psychology theory is known as positive affirmation (self-affirmation theory). Well, having a good name means that you and whoever that address you are practicing this!

Naming your child

“赐子千金,不如教子一艺。教子一艺,不如赐子好名。

Meaning: “Instead of giving your child wealth, teach him a skill. Instead of teaching him a skill, give him a good name.”

The above is quite an ancient way to fortify the importance of having a good name. If you are looking at this article in detail (Parent to be), you are likely to be ethnic-Chinese Singaporeans, and I would not be surprised that your name's Chinese character may have "算过笔画." While Chinese Metaphysics and Auspicious baby names are not confined to Chinese babies, the prevalence of Auspicious name selection for Singaporean babies is still pretty rooted in Chinese culture.

How do you name your child RIGHT?

Naming involves more than just computing the number of strokes in a Chinese name. When considering a good name, there are numerous considerations to factor in. This could range from the child bazi, strokes of the Chinese character (各), the concept of 5 elements, and others.

Recently, Chinese metaphysic guidebooks have also focused on names based on the Zodiac, a hugely simplified way of naming. (Imagine all Chinese babies within a year will have similar-sounding legal names)

It is pretty challenging to guide a person in naming your child correctly. It is way too personal and involves lots of detail. However, there are some areas which we usually advise parents to avoid.

In Chinese culture, respecting ancestors and family traditions is very important. Using a name that conflicts with family customs, such as using a forbidden character or name already used by an older family member (or for a child born into the same generation), can be considered disrespectful. Avoiding names that are seen as too informal or improper within the family hierarchy is also essential.

The pronunciation (讲究字音) of a name is just as important as its meaning (讲究字义). In Chinese culture, the tones and sounds of a name carry great significance, and names that are harsh or unpleasant in sound may invite teasing. For example, certain syllables or tones should be avoided due to their associations with misfortune or negativity. Additionally, the visual appeal of a name (讲究字形) matters as well. The structure of the characters should be thoughtfully selected to ensure the name is aesthetically pleasing and meaningful.

Debunking some Myths when it comes to having an auspicious Name

The birth surname does not matter - This is a common myth, considering that some may have heard that 百家姓 should not have an impact on a name's 吉凶 (auspiciousness). This is untrue, as the surname is considered when computing certain 格局. While there are, in fact, no "bad" surnames, a surname still holds a particular influence on the overall auspiciousness, and it is important to select a personal name that compliments the birth surname.

Are two-character names better or worse? - This is a common question. There is no evidence from Chinese Metaphysics that a two-character name is better or worse. However, it is definitely more challenging for a Chinese Metaphysics Master to offer a good name, considering that there is only one variable in a two-character name setup.

Unusual names are better - The converse is more accurate. In some cases, the name may need to be altered to enhance its auspiciousness. This may result in a unique or unusual name.

Chinese naming services are only for Chinese families or babies - Well, this is untrue. We have foreigners who are intensely interested in Chinese Metaphysics coming to us for an Auspicious Name selection. Though we must admit that the translation for certain English names is a huge challenge, there are no limitations regarding race or religion for an auspicious name selection.

How can we help?

A Chinese name is more than just an identity; it is the first gift that a parent bestows to a child. Selecting a Chinese name for a newborn is a meaningful process beyond just choosing a unique name. A name that resonates, complements, and aligns with your child will bring good fortune, health, and prosperity.

We will offer a few suitable names for your consideration in our deliverables. These names are selected based on careful evaluation of the following:

1) The Chinese names of the parents

2) Gender of the child

3) Any preference for a particular Chinese character or name that is actually more preferred

4) Child Bazi - Time of birth

A good name goes a long way! Consider a Baby Name consultation!
