Feng Shui and Bazi
For Feng Shui to be personalized, some form of Bazi analysis of the occupants will definitely be required. That is an undeniable fact for any Feng Shui Consultation, whether it is for Residential Feng Shui or Office Feng Shui (Commercial Feng Shui). Do not be misunderstood; if the occupants' information is not being used in the Feng Shui Consultation, it simply means that the Feng Shui process is solely catered to the apartment or the commercial premise in general. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. It is true that some Feng Shui methodologies do not require a person's Bazi or require minimal details to implement the Feng Shui audit. While we recognize that, we strongly encourage our readers and clients to opt for something personalized. You may refer to our earlier article for more information on Personalized Feng Shui. Afterall, a house or office space Feng Shui can generally be good but if it doesn't suit your Bazi, then it will be futile. Just like if you hate seafood, even if the Boston Lobster roll is a delicacy for many, it just doesn't suit your tastebuds.
Why Feng Shui? - Cosmic Trinity
Heard of this? The cosmic trinity is formed by Heaven, Earth and Mankind (天、地、人). Each of these will contribute to exactly one-third (33%) of everyone's life. I would like to take some time to elaborate a bit on these three aspects. Although we briefly mentioned this on our website, I feel that this is still a fundamental concept for everyone, whether you are a Feng Shui veteran, a person interested in Feng Shui, or just leisurely reading this article.
Heaven (天)
Heaven (天) is something that is pre-destined and cannot be altered. This is what you are born, what you are fated to be, and what you are destined to do or meet. The list is endless, but basically, it is something that is way beyond any person's control. A significant portion of metaphysics actually falls into this category of attempting to know what is being destined ahead of time. In simple terms, predicting what is about to happen next. Bazi falls into this category, as does face-reading and/or any form of metaphysics where you attempt to read into the future. While knowing what will happen next allows you to be prepared, Heaven probably already foresees you knowing what will happen next. (Sounds confusing?) The desire to know the unknown and the desire to be ready for it is in our nature. So it is highly common for a person to want to know what is stalled for them in their life. For most commoners like us, it is impossible to have a Bazi that is so perfect that you are pink of health till 80, a billionaire without worries, zero toxic friends, and a happy family. Well, the message that you should take home is that Heaven's luck is something beyond our control.
Mankind (人)
Mankind refers to us. Human beings make decisions, and every decision opens or closes certain doors. Every action will lead to another and another. The possibilities are just endless and the number of possible permutations? Probably reaching the infinity mark. These daily decisions all result in domino effects.
Apart from that, we can also understand that our actions will result in specific energy being attracted to us. Kindness begets kindness, and good begets good. This belief or thought has been deeply etched in many civilizations for millenniums. You reap what you sow.
Mankind Luck, to put it simply, is our choice. Whether it is a decision, an action, or a reaction.
Earth (地)
Notice I leave Earth for the last. Well, Earth is something in between Heaven and Mankind. Earth is something that we can possibly change, and sometimes, it is something we cannot change.
So what is Earth luck all about? Earth refers to the environment. The surroundings and setup you are in, the vehicle you took this morning to work, the office space left during the evening rush hour, or the bedroom you are currently in. On a larger scale, it could be the Central Business District you were in, the neighborhood you reside in, or the country you live in. The environment is dynamic and everchanging, by either somebody else's decision or a force of nature that one cannot really amend.
Feng Shui is the study of a person's Earth luck, and practicing Feng Shui is attempting to change this. Let's put this into a very relatable example: your house. The fact that you are living in your house is a mixture of Heaven's luck and Mankind's luck. Assume you are living in a new BTO apartment in the lovely estates of Bidadari, Singapore, with your Spouse, whom you got to know through a friend (Janet) 6 years ago.
At age 0, both of you are born here to both Singapore parents (Heaven's Luck)
At age 6, you managed to get into your desired Primary school (more likely your parent's choice) via 2C balloting while your Spouse failed in the balloting of his preferred school (A mixture of Heaven's luck and Mankind's luck – both of your parents)
At age 17, you got to Janet in JC. (A combination of Heaven's luck and Mankind's luck)
At age 21, you held a birthday party and invited Janet. Janet asked if she could bring someone (your current Spouse), and you agreed. (Mankind's luck, had you said no…)
At age 22, you got together with your current Spouse and subsequently applied for BTO (Mankind's luck)
At age 24, after failing 3 applications, you got a favourable queue number that allows you to choose the current apartment (Heaven's luck and Mankind's luck)
Now – You arrived at the current residential apartment after umpteenth times of Heaven and Mankind luck.
Well, your environment is a result of both the heavens and Mankind's luck. It will also alter and change due to both of these lucks. A thunderstorm can uproot the lovely tree in front of you, and you can decide to alter the position of your sofa or hack down the wall to combine 2 rooms into 1. The environment is dynamic and everchanging, and you would not always be in a single place. Feng Shui is the study of the environment you are in. It attempts to improvise and optimize spatial arrangement to achieve enhanced earth luck.
As I mentioned, earth luck is the environment you are in. You can be at your house earlier today, but you can be traveling now and probably will be in the office later. These environments change, and you can't be implementing Feng Shui wherever you go. Hence, as Feng Shui practitioners, we always prioritized residential Feng Shui due to the considerable amount of time one will spend at home. Therefore, earth luck is something that you may alter. The degree of adjustments may vary as it is way too dynamic and may involve uncontrollable factors.
After understanding the cosmic trinity, you might realise that out of Heaven, Earth, mankind luck, those truly that you have control over form about 66%. Strictly speaking, that figure may be lower as Feng Shui for your environment is more than just residential Feng Shui and office Feng Shui.
Feng Shui is something that can improve your general luck when implemented correctly. We believe in this: 坐凶找吉，凶中有吉，吉中加吉. The simplified meaning is that through our services, we hope to better the lives and luck of our clients through Feng Shui Consultation. We try to reduce the severity if they are going through a bad patch. If they are on a roll, we hope to maximize it. Feng Shui is unlikely to turn things around by 180 degrees, nor is it an immediate remedy.
Feng Shui or Bazi
After understanding the basics of the cosmic trinity, the next question you may ask would probably be Feng Shui or Bazi? Or perhaps you will question why Bazi?
An in-depth Feng Shui analysis by a Feng Shui master will incorporate Bazi during the consultation. Since you are within that environment, you cannot be excluded from that equation. Apart from Mankind's luck, Earth's luck is the only thing that human beings can seek to alter. Feng Shui can help hasten and magnify a person's potential in life. The degree to which Feng Shui can accelerate is no doubt tied closely to a person's potential acquired by virtue of heaven luck. A person with limited heaven luck may still have excellent life achievements. With a positive, determined attitude (mankind luck) and an opportunistic desire for good Earth luck (Feng Shui), the combined effect will likely bring success and attainment in one's life.

For Bazi, it gives you an idea of what is in store for you. It could be a period of exceptional luck, there could be certain 灾 or 劫 ahead, or you may have more peach blossom luck than you wanted. Knowing these, to a certain degree, may allow you to be "prepared," but more often than not, things happen as they should happen.
There is nothing wrong with either, and all metaphysics, in general, will add value in one way or another. However, the actionability and the extent of available remedies may differ. Whether one is better or not, I would think it will be down to the intention of each person.
Conclusion
Feng Shui itself cannot be the remedy to all your problems. Neither will it be the solution to all your woes. While we can't control Heaven's luck, it is thankful that we can do something for the other two (earth and mankind luck). By making informed decisions, being diligent, resilient, knowledgeable, and so on, you are performing an action that seeks to improve your Mankind's luck. Feng Shui is just the remaining one-third of the trinity. It is too weak to turn the tide alone but may be strong enough to tilt one's fortune. Like having 3 partners in a business, neither is the majority. Still, every vote is significant, especially when you are the tiebreaker.
