What is Feng Shui?

By aligning your environment with the natural energy of the universe, Feng Shui aims to promote harmony, Prosperity, and well-being in your daily life.

The practice involves various elements, including using colors, shapes, quantities and materials to enhance positive energy flow.

In essence, Feng Shui is about creating a peaceful and energetically vibrant space. This unique approach to design and organization has gained immense popularity worldwide as people seek environments that nurture their physical and emotional states. One of the most effective tools in achieving a balanced and positive atmosphere is the strategic placement of water features, such as fountains.

The Role of Water in Feng Shui

Water is considered a vital element in Feng Shui, often known to the mass as the element representing abundance.

When incorporated effectively, water features, such as fountains, can harness this energy, creating an atmosphere that invites abundance and vitality. Water's flowing nature is viewed as a catalyst for attracting positive opportunities and increasing financial well-being. However, it's essential to consider proper placement to ensure that this energy flows harmoniously throughout your living or working space. Failure to do so may result in a backfire, causing loss of wealth or financial outlays.

Benefits of Water Fountains in Feng Shui

Adding a water fountain to your home or office can bring many benefits, energetically and aesthetically. Here are some of the principal advantages of incorporating fountains into your Feng Shui practice:

1. Enhances Prosperity

Fountains with multiple tiers or cascades are particularly potent, and tier-ed nature signifies growth. The water element is commonly associated with wealth (水为财), and the continuous flow of water has the auspicious meaning of an endless inflow of wealth. By incorporating a water fountain into your home or workspace, you are enhancing the aesthetic appeal and inviting a continuous flow of financial resources and opportunities. Conversely, avoid using a stagnant or clouded water fountain, as stagnation can symbolize lost opportunities and decreased vitality. (There are certain Feng Shui remedies which involve non-flowing water and are used for specific purposes)

2. Promotes Relaxation and Well-Being

The soothing sound of water has long been recognized for its ability to promote relaxation and reduce stress. Creating a calming environment is essential for maintaining mental health in our fast-paced lives. Water fountains can serve as a gentle background noise that drowns out the clamor of daily life, allowing for moments of meditation and introspection.

In Feng Shui, tranquil areas populated by water features can enhance the overall sense of peace and facilitate a restorative atmosphere. This emphasis on tranquility nurtures the mind and encourages physical well-being, thereby harmonizing both personal and environmental energies.

3. Five Elements - Water

Water is inherently linked to the concepts of wealth and Prosperity in Feng Shui. This connection stems from the belief that water represents abundance, vitality, and the flow of life energy (Qi). However, in Feng Shui, a water feature or water fountain is used primarily to signify the water element. Certain sectors may require a water element as the ideal activation element during a Feng Shui consultation. Hence, a water feature or a water fountain may be the best choice. Please refer to the following paragraph for clarifications on how the 5 elements are used in Feng Shui.

Concept of 5 elements Feng Shui

In the realm of Feng Shui, the concept of the five elements—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water—plays a critical role in establishing balance and harmony within a space. Each element represents different aspects of life and can affect our energy, health, and well-being. When integrating a Feng Shui water fountain into your environment, understanding how water interacts with the other four elements can significantly enhance its positive influence. For more information on the 5 elements, you may refer to this article.

1. Water and Its Connections

As one of the five elements, water embodies wealth, tranquility, and spiritual calmness. It is associated with the night, the flow of wealth and knowledge, and the deep currents of personal insight. In Feng Shui, water element features like fountains enhance communication, creativity, and inspiration. Integrating an indoor water fountain in your space amplifies the essence of the water element and naturally curates a space conducive to fluid thought processes and emotional connection.

2. Interaction with Other Elements

  • Water element with Wood: Water nourishes Wood 相生, promoting growth and vitality. A water fountain placed in sectors identified as wood encourages the growth of that sector, resulting in more auspicious positive energy, Qi (气). Depending on the aspect of that area under the various methodologies, it can either promote health, wealth, career, or relationship luck.

  • Water Element with Water: In the concept of 5 elements Feng Shui, water on water strengthens its position as a water element (相旺). Placing a water feature such as an indoor water fountain on a sector that is the element of water will strengthen its position. Similarly, depending on what kind of luck each segment carries, the strengthened aspects could be health, wealth, career, business, or romance luck.

Why and How is Water Fountain Used in Feng Shui?

Water fountains are prized for their ability to attract positive energy for one key reason—their continuous flow of water. This water flow greatly enhances water energy, as movement encourages the flow of energy.

It's important to consider the placement of a Feng Shui water fountain to incorporate it effectively. We will cover that in the following paragraphs.

What Feng Shui Water Fountain Material Is the Best?

There is no one specific material that is the best. It will depend on the sector's element that you wish to activate. Although a water fountain comprises water energy, another minor element could be incorporated, and one should not be too particular about it. In the spirit of discussion, we will cover this briefly. A ceramic water fountain is made of an earth element; a metal water fountain or one with metallic material is considered a metal element. A feng shui water fountain with wood material, such as a bamboo fountain, will be considered a wood element.

What Type or Style of Water Fountain Is The Best?

This is the more interesting part. There are some key things to note when selecting a Feng Shui Water Fountain. Let's break it down into point forms on what is the optimal selection:

Feng Shui Water Feature
3 Tier Table Top Water Feature

a) Having a tiered water fountain - It is common to find a 3-tier tabletop water fountain or tiered fountain. Having tiers signifies flow, and it is ideal.

b) Direction—The direction in which the water flows is extremely important. Depending on the different types of fountains, the water flow may be in a single direction or, in some cases, multiple directions. For water features that feature a rolling crystal ball, the flow of water may be multidirectional. This may be of concern. By having a clear general direction of the water flow, we can control the flow of energy, thereby increasing the accumulation of wealth energy.

c) Outdoor fountain vs. tabletop fountain—The size of the water fountain matters intuitively, as it will increase the flow rate of the auspicious energy. However, not everyone is blessed with an outdoor space, and as long as the water fountain is placed in an auspicious location, it will still bring about auspicious energy.

d) If possible, avoid broken water fountains or fountains that incorporate ruins as their theme. Also, avoid fast-flowing water fountains, such as steep and wide waterfalls.

4 Areas to Place Your Indoor Feng Shui Water Fountain

At the Front Door

As a general rule of thumb, consider placing a Feng Shui Water Fountain at the front door of your residence. Ensure that it faces inward. However, we would like to highlight that knowing the area's elements is critical before even considering a water feature.

Areas Associated with Wood Element

Suppose you have some basics in Feng Shui and have already identified the areas of the wood element. In that case, having a water fountain in this area will be highly auspicious and promote beneficial energy. A slight tip for the 2025 flying star, do consider activating the South-East 2 direction. It is one of the best directions to have a wooden water fountain, such as a bamboo water fountain. You may read this article for more information on Flying Star 2025.

The North, East, or South-East Corner

Under the Flying Star method, your residence's North, East, or South-East sector is primarily an element of water or wood. Having an indoor water fountain will encourage wealth and energy. However, the direction of the water flow will matter; hence, pay attention to your water feature's placement.

Period 9

One effective way to enhance your wealth and income luck is to activate the indirect spirit (零神) of the period.  According to ancient texts, the palace of the indirect spirit (零神) changes with the Periods. (Not to be confused with flying star period). The palace of the direct spirit (正神) and indirect spirit (零神) is directly opposite of each other.  In period 9 the direct spirit (正神) is in the South while the indirect spirit (零神) is in the North.

That being said, there is another reason to make use of a water feature to activate the north section of your house.

2 Areas to Avoid Placing Your Feng Shui Water Fountain

Avoid the Bedroom

When considering the placement of a Feng Shui water fountain, it is advisable to avoid the bedroom as this could disrupt the tranquil and restful energy needed for sleep. While soothing for some, the sound of flowing water may lead to restlessness and anxiety for others, preventing a peaceful night's rest. Instead, it's best to reserve the calming effects of water features for areas of the home that promote activity and vitality, such as living rooms or entryways.

Avoid the South Sector

The Southern sector of your home is traditionally associated with the fire element, which can create conflicting energy if combined with water. Placing a water fountain in this area may lead to a clash of elemental forces, potentially disrupting the harmony you seek to achieve.

Alternatives to Water Fountain

Understand that water fountains or waterfalls may not be for everyone. However, there are many water-based alternatives to Feng Shui water fountains.

Fish Tank

Rivarium

Assuming it is the activation of the eastern or south-eastern sector, a vivarium can also be considered. A vivarium is a controlled environment designed for keeping aquatic animals and plants, typically featuring a flowing water system that mimics natural river conditions.

Water Fountain and Bazi

Although there are ideal locations for a water feature based on the house's Feng Shui, the occupant's Bazi also plays a key role in determining its suitability. A personalised Feng Shui consultation will consider both Feng Shui and the occupant's Bazi, thereby accurately assessing whether a water feature is advantageous.

Conclusion

However, careful consideration of placement is essential to fully harness the benefits of this powerful element in Feng Shui. Avoiding locations such as your home's bedroom or southern sector.
