Feng Shui Bedroom
Feng Shui: Look good? Think again.

In Feng Shui, the master bedroom is one of the most important areas of your home. You spend almost 1/3 of your life resting and there is no doubt that the energy of your master bedroom directly influences your well-being and relationships. Although Feng Shui is a highly personalized service, there are still some common do’s and don’ts when it comes to the design of the Master Bedroom. Here, we explore the 7 key don’ts in your master bedroom to improve the Feng Shui of your Master Bedroom.

1. Avoid Beams Over the Bedhead

One of the most common Feng Shui mistakes is having a ceiling beam directly above the bedhead. Beams in Feng Shui are considered to be disruptive energy sources, causing a feeling of oppression, stress, or tension. This can lead to disturbed sleep, health issues, and even emotional strain.

If your master bedroom has a beam above the bed, it is advisable to reposition the bed so it is no longer under the beam. However, considering the traditionally small bed rooms, it might not be feasible to adjust the position of the bed. It is thus advisable to consult your trusted Feng Shui Master for advice to resolve this undesired beam structure through Feng Shui methods.

2. Don’t Place the Bed Directly Facing the Door or Toilet Door

In Feng Shui, the position of the bed is crucial. The bed should never be placed directly in line with the door, particularly the bedroom door or the toilet door. Facing the door can cause anxiety and disrupt the energy flow, creating a sense of vulnerability while you sleep. It is also considered a poor placement for health and wealth.

Instead, position your bed in a commanding position where you can see the door without being directly in line with it. If this isn’t possible, use a curtain or screen to block the view and create a more peaceful energy. Feng Shui is actually the study and observation of natural occurrence, flow and balance of energy. It is therefore no surprise that some of this positionings are intuitive. A bed place in a commanding position will no doubt allow the person to observe and react to any person entering the room without being startled.

3. Mirrors or TV Facing the Bed

Having mirrors or a TV facing the bed is highly undesired from Feng Shui practices. Mirrors reflect energy, and having them face your bed can lead to restlessness, disturbed sleep, and a constant flow of activity in your bedroom that contradicts the calming and restorative environment you need.

Similarly, placing a TV is very similar to that of a mirror considering its reflective properties. However, in localized Singapore context, having a TV or screen in the bedroom is common and many may appreciate a short drama episode prior to resting. The solution? One may consider having a opaque sliding door to hide the reflective TV when resting.

4. No Storage Under the Bed – Keep it Clutter-Free

In Feng Shui, clutter is one of the most powerful disruptors of positive energy. Clutter and storage are usually associated with old or unused items; an association of negative energies. Keeping items under the bed, especially a storage bed, not only block the flow of energy but may affects the person’s sleep quality and sleep environment.

Space management and minimalist design theme usually increase the need of more storage. It is quite common for bed to be place upon a storage bed frame or a storage platform. If having a storage space under your bed is a must, we strongly advice to keep it tidy and clean, placing preferably lightweight items.  Consider cleaning the space frequently and avoid storing items that are spoiled.

5. Air Conditioning Outlet Above the Bedhead

In modern homes, air conditioning is essential, especially in hot climates like Singapore. However, placing the air conditioning outlet directly above the bedhead is a Feng Shui no-no. Cold or strong air blowing directly onto your head while sleeping can disrupt your body’s natural energy balance and lead to health problems such as stiff necks or headaches. We would think that this is both an optimal Feng Shui Practice and also a good medical tip.

If your bed is positioned under an air conditioning outlet, it’s recommended to adjust the air direction so that the air doesn’t directly blow over the bed. Additionally, you can use a ceiling fan or portable fan positioned strategically to circulate the air without causing direct discomfort.

6. No Ornaments Like 灵兽 (Mythical Beasts) in the Bedroom

In Feng Shui, certain items are better suited for specific areas of the home. Ornaments such as 灵兽 (translated as "mythical beasts" or "mythical guardians") are powerful symbols of protection and strength, but they should not be placed in the bedroom. Some examples include 龙龟、貔貅、麒麟、金蟾.  These items are mythical and should be avoided in all bedrooms as they are usually place of intimacy. Another reason for not doing so is that they are often associated with high power and authority, which may be contradictive to the calming environment of what a bedroom should entails.

One should exercise cautions when placing mythical beasts or mythical guardians in any part of their house. They may be effective in some scenarios but when placed in a wrong position, there may be undesirable consequences. Seek professional help from trusted Feng Shui Professionals.

7. Avoid Placing the Bed in the Four Inauspicious Directions Under Eight Mansion Feng Shui

The Eight Mansion Feng Shui system divides the home into eight areas, each linked to a specific direction that can influence your life’s different aspects such as health, wealth, and relationships. In this system, there are four inauspicious directions that should be avoided when placing your bed. These directions are linked to harmful energies that can impact your sleep quality, relationships, or even health.

It is essential to consult a Feng Shui master to ensure your bed is placed in an auspicious direction based on your personal Kua number (a number derived from your birth date). Placing your bed in an auspicious direction helps improve the Qi and thus enhancing the occupant’s wealth and career luck.

Special Feng Shui Tip 1: Pick an Auspicious Date for Bed Installation

Auspicious Date Selection
Selecting an Auspicious date for bed installation

Surprised? That is some of the reaction of our clients when we suggest this to them. Many are only aware that Auspicious dates can be selected for moving in, renovation or commencement of a business. Lesser know that it is also very important to pick an auspicious date for bed installation. When setting up your bed, timing can make a significant difference in improving and maintain a loving relationship for couples. For singles, this auspicious timing will likely improve your quality of rest and therefore having the right level of energy for your career.

Special Feng Shui Tip 2: Never put your wedding photo directly above your bedhead

Another surprise? This is one common practice that you probably would see in many young couples. However, from Feng Shui perspective, doing so is likely to result in frequent disagreement and being calculative in the couple’s relationship. Don’t worry, you need not discard that wedding photo. Placing it in an appropriate position of your bedroom will in fact bring about everlasting bliss!
